Choosing car tyres in Poole

The right car tyres make a real difference to how your car stops, steers and feels on the road. We supply and fit car tyres in Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and across Dorset, and we'll help you choose a tyre that suits the way you actually drive. Every car tyre comes in budget, mid-range and premium options.

Budget, mid-range or premium: the honest trade-offs

Every new tyre sold in the UK must meet legal safety standards, so a budget tyre is not an unsafe tyre. The differences between the bands show up in a few key areas.

  • Grip in the wet: higher-end tyres generally stop shorter on wet roads. It's often the biggest difference between the bands.
  • Road noise: premium tyres tend to be quieter and more comfortable, which you'll notice on longer motorway runs.
  • Wear life: a more expensive tyre often lasts longer, so the cost per mile can be closer than the price tag suggests.
  • Fuel economy: tyres with lower rolling resistance need less effort to turn, which can help a little with fuel or battery range.

New tyres carry a label that rates fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise, which makes it easier to compare. Our honest view is that a premium tyre isn't always the right call. If you drive short, low-mileage trips around town, a good budget or mid-range tyre may make more sense. If you cover high mileage or carry the family on long journeys, spending more often pays back.

Run-flat tyres

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that support the car for a limited distance after a loss of pressure, so you can keep driving at reduced speed to somewhere safe. The distance and speed are set by the car or tyre manufacturer, so check your handbook. Cars fitted with run-flats often have no spare wheel and rely on a tyre pressure monitoring system to warn you of a problem.

Run-flats should be replaced like-for-like. Mixing run-flat and conventional tyres on the same car isn't recommended, because they behave differently, and the car's suspension is often set up with run-flats in mind. The marking on the sidewall varies between manufacturers, so if you're unsure what you have, we'll check for you.

4x4 and SUV tyres

4x4 and SUV tyres are usually larger and carry higher load indexes than standard car tyres, to cope with the extra weight. Most drivers in Dorset are well suited to a road-focused pattern, while all-terrain tyres suit those who regularly go off the tarmac, onto farm tracks or down to the beach car park.

On four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive cars, many manufacturers advise keeping tread depths closely matched across all four tyres. We'll check yours and tell you whether you need two tyres or four.

Same-day fitting, at the depot or on your driveway

We can usually fit car tyres on the same day. Pop into our Poole depot for our best price, or let us come to you with our mobile tyre fitting service, at home, at work or wherever you've parked.

Your price covers the tyre itself, fitting, wheel balancing, a new rubber valve and disposal of the old tyre. What we quote is what you pay. If you're still weighing up sizes or seasonal options, our main new tyres page explains how to read your sidewall and when tyres need replacing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace tyres in pairs?

Ideally, yes. Replacing both tyres on the same axle keeps grip and handling even from side to side. The usual UK industry advice is to put the newer tyres on the rear, which helps keep the car stable if you lose grip in the wet.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting is typically quick. Because we can come to you, you can carry on with your day at home or at work while we change your tyres.

Can I drive on a run-flat tyre after a puncture?

Yes, for a limited distance at reduced speed, as set out in your handbook. After that, get the tyre checked. Some manufacturers advise against repairing run-flats, so replacement is often the answer, and we'll tell you honestly.

Do you fit car tyres at weekends?

Yes. We're open 7 days a week: 8am–6pm Monday to Saturday and 9am–6pm on Sunday. Call 0800 7311 260 to book a time that suits you.
