Locking wheel nut removal in Poole and across Dorset

Lost the key to your locking wheel nuts? Snapped it, or found the nut so rounded that the key just spins? It's one of the most common reasons drivers get stuck, often at the worst moment, such as with a flat tyre and a spare you can't fit. We remove locking wheel nuts without the key, using specialist tools and without damaging your wheels. Bring the car to our Poole depot or we'll come to you at home, at work or at the roadside, usually the same day.

What is a locking wheel nut?

A locking wheel nut (or locking wheel bolt) replaces one of the normal nuts on each wheel. Instead of a standard hexagon head, it has a unique pattern that can only be turned with a matching key. The idea is to stop thieves taking your alloys.

In practice, the locking nut causes more trouble than it prevents. Keys go missing when cars change hands, get left behind in a garage, or wear out until they no longer grip. Nuts that have been overtightened with an impact gun can strip or round off, so even the right key won't move them.

Common problems we sort out

  • Lost or missing key. Very common with second-hand cars.
  • Broken or worn key. The pattern has chewed up and won't grip.
  • Rounded or damaged nut. Usually from overtightening or the wrong tool.
  • Seized nut. Corrosion between the nut and the wheel hub.
  • Locking nuts on vans and caravans as well as cars.

How we remove them

Different locking nuts and different kinds of damage need different methods, so our technicians carry a range of specialist removal tools, master kits and extractors. We start with the least invasive method that will work, and take care to protect the alloy around the nut. Once all the locking nuts are off, we can refit your wheels with standard nuts so you're never caught out again.

If you're also due new tyres, a puncture repair or new brake pads and discs, we can do it all in the same visit.

Find your key before you need it

If you still have your key, a few minutes now can save hassle later:

  • Keep the key in the same place, such as the glovebox or the spare wheel well, and tell anyone else who drives the car.
  • Many keys have a code number on the key or on a card from the dealer. Make a note of it, because a replacement key can sometimes be ordered with it.
  • Ask the garage to tighten locking nuts by hand to the correct torque, not with an impact gun.

Stuck with a flat and no key?

That's exactly when you need us quickest. Our emergency tyre fitting team can remove the locking nut and fit a new tyre or repair a puncture in one visit, with an average arrival time of under 60 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Will removing the locking nut damage my alloy wheel?

We use the right tool for each type of locking nut and work carefully to protect the wheel. That's why it's best left to someone with the proper kit, rather than a hammer and an old socket.

Can you remove locking wheel nuts at my home?

Yes. Every service, including locking wheel nut removal, is available at your home, workplace or the roadside, as well as at our Poole depot.

Can you do it if my tyre is flat?

Yes. We often remove a locking nut and then repair or replace the tyre in the same visit.

Do you remove locking nuts on vans and caravans?

Yes, as well as cars. Tell us the vehicle when you book.

How soon can you come out?

Usually the same day, seven days a week. Call 0800 7311 260 and we'll find the earliest slot.
